The Swiss publishing house Birkhäuser is a world renowned publisher of scientific material which also specialises in architecture and design.

Yet fame alone is not enough. To stay on the burgeoning international stage, a visual presence is required that will leave competitors in the shade. Birkhäuser needs to be easily recognisable by both retailers and readers.

Recognisability relies on uniformity. Whether it's book covers or marketing, word mark along with design rules that visibly bring together the scientific programme and the architecture and design publications.

The new corporate design by Edenspiekermann manages to be clear and unambiguous. Now there is only one typography and one style of illustration. The differentiated colour concept denotes the different fields of science. The layout system for all book covers and inner pages is the superior unifying design principle. Thus uniformity is emphasised among highly individual titles – and that strengthens the brand. The corporate design for Birkhäuser has been nominated for the German Federal Republic's 2009 design award.
