Typographic Freedom For The Web

typography for the web

A move which web designers have long desired allows freedom of typographic design on the Web. This will finally enable businesses and brands to control their appearance across all media. Edenspiekermann is testing this new freedom on itself by setting its homepage in the house font ESPI Sans & Slab, starting immediately.

At last web designers are no longer reliant on the established system fonts such as Times and Arial which are installed on all computers. Typographic emergency solutions using Flash or similar technology will also now become a thing of the past. The new typographic freedom is just as important for designers as it is for businesses, who will now want to distinguish themselves on the Web. Edenspiekermann is planning to offer its clients this new service as soon as possible.

How does it work?
Major font libraries such as FSI FontShop International have already had a selection of fonts converted for web use on offer since February. These so-called web fonts are delivered in two formats: EOT (Embedded OpenType) and WOFF (Web Open Format Fonts). Unfortunately the relatively new WOFF format is not yet supported by all browsers. That’s why Edenspiekermann has lodged its own house font at the web font service Typekit, which supports all browser variants which cannot yet process the WOFF format.
